Hand Painted Buffalo Skull, Black War Bonnet Design
Native Americans of the Northern Plains hand-painted buffalo skulls to honor their tribal beliefs. This war bonnet design is found throughout Native American territory and was commonly used for men’s robes.
The stylized image represents the war bonnet-style headdress, viewed from behind. The black and white colors represent the eagle feathers used in the construction of war bonnets. This design was often accompanied by other drawings to create a war record, capturing battle exploits. The dimensions are 65 x 56 cm. This is a natural skull, reinforced and mounted on oak wood, specially treated for preservation, and ready to hang.
