In many spiritual and shamanic traditions, Agua Florida is used to cleanse the aura and the space around a person, releasing negative energies and creating a protective shield. Agua Florida is also used ritually in ayahuasca rituals in Bolivia and Peru: the healer or shaman sips a small amount of the liquid and then blows it over the top of the head and into the palms of the hands. Also in Central America, Agua Florida is one of the objects used by traditional Mayan healers.
Benefits attributed to Agua de Florida include relieving muscle pain or headaches, by applying a small amount of the liquid to the sore areas, forehead, or temples, and gently massaging it in. Some also use it as a tonic for its softening and astringent effect on the skin.
Agua de Florida originated in New York and was created by Robert I. Murray in 1808, although it has been traditionally manufactured in Peru for over 100 years. It is a mixture of essential oils from aromatic plants, such as lavender, rosemary, orange, clove, lemon or grapefruit.
